Yuqi Fan is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in New York, working across jewelry, photography, and painting. Her practice explores the intricate and emotional relationships people and their beloved objects, drawing inspiration from subcultures such as doll-keeping. By researching the loneliness epidemic and related psychological theories about object attachment issues, she explores how objects such as jewelry can serve as vessels for emotion, memory, and identity.

Yuqi’s work invites the viewer to engage in intimate, surreal experiences that blur the line between reality and fantasy. Her works delve into how desire and care for an object can shape our relationships with the material world.

Mold Lockets

Resin, sterling silver, silicon, mother of pearls

Jewelry is a great medium for containing and carrying deep, sentimental feelings. The nature of both doll and jewelry is similar. As a human-like artifact, it is natural for people to make emotional connections and imbue their love towards dolls. I am drawn to articulate the issue of object attachment towards dolls in the form of sentimental jewelry. In my jewelry series, Mold Locket, I reimagined the mourning lockets as molds for doll casting.

The motions of using the Mold Locket - injecting resin and taking out the product - is mimicking the production process of dolls and referencing giving birth to a child. I use this piece of jewelry to engage the wearer in the creative process, enabling them to feel the effort and dedication of doll lovers. The separation between the doll and the human part adds a sense of sadness that no matter how deep one’s attachment with the doll is, they can never truly emulate a human relationship.
